Eyelid Surgery
Blepharoplasty is another term for eyelid surgery. This kind of plastic surgery procedure may not be that popular as compared to the liposuction and breast augmentation procedures that are being talked about on a constant basis. Although it might not be as popular as the others, there are a significant number of people who choose to go with this procedure.
Eyelid surgery basically removes fat deposits above of the eyelids as well as below the eyelids or eye bags. There are a number of misconceptions about the procedure. Some people think that eyelid surgeries actually erase crow’s feet and wrinkles, but blepharoplasty actually does not. At the same time, there is much concern about the procedure altering specific racial features. Asians who do not have creases who undergo eyelid surgery may have a crease but that does not mean that the procedure makes a person racially indistinguishable. Often times, eyelid surgery is done side by side with face lift procedures and brow lift procedures.
The reason that eyelid surgeries become necessary has to do with the intrinsic nature of skin. Although skin is elastic and can stretch and tighten according to need, sometimes the skin can lose its ability to become elastic. For this reason, you may have drooping or sagging skin after a few years. Also, as one ages, the facial muscles weaken and this can also cause drooping.
There are a lot of psychological effects in getting plastic surgery. The most important of which is being able to view oneself a lot better than before. Although one should never judge a person according to his or her facial characteristics, the fact remains that our self-esteem is improved when we know that we look great. Consequently, if you’re not satisfied with the way you look in the mirror, this mentality may affect the way you socialize and interact with other people.
Because the sagging of the skin is evident mostly among older people, those who go for eyelid surgery are often aged 35 and above. However, people with genes for drooping and sagging eye muscles and skin may need to have the procedure done at a relatively earlier time.
The procedure is not recommended for some individuals. People who have hypothyroidism and Grave’s disease are not advised to have eyelid surgery. At the same time, individuals who have dry eyes, glaucoma and other eye issues should consult their ophthalmologist first before making any decision.
Eyelid surgery can come with a number of risks. Swelling and scarring may ensue. It is also normal to develop whiteheads after the sutures come out, though your surgeon should be able to get rid of them easily.
The duration of an eyelid surgery will depend on the extent of work that has to be done. The surgery can take anywhere from one to three hours. The upper eyelids will be worked on first before the lower eyelids. Your doctor will make incisions and will follow the creases of your eyelids. From these incisions, your doctor should be able to remove fatty tissue, drooping muscle and skin.
Your eyes will have to be lubricated after the procedure with the help of ointment and your eyes may be all bandaged. Medicine can be given to address any pain that you might feel. Bruising and swelling is expected and may be controlled with the help of cold compresses. Your doctor will likely advise the use of eye drops to keep your eyes from welling up.
